—ABOUT
NIDO is a knitwear brand based in Buenos Aires. I founded it in 2012, starting with a small collection of accessories, and it grew from there into a full range of knitwear.
Everything is made by hand, here in Buenos Aires, from yarn produced in Argentina. I work in three techniques: hand-knitted on needles, hand-framed on a manual machine, and hand-woven on a loom. The fibres are sheep and llama wool, cotton and linen.
Nothing is made before it is sold. There is no stock and no deadstock. Each piece is made once it has been ordered, in small batches. A single order takes about a month to reach you. A wholesale order takes four to twelve weeks to produce, depending on its size.
—HOW IT IS MADE
Some of the wool is hand-spun on treadle wheels by spinners in Tucumán, in the north of the country, and hand-dyed there with colours obtained from natural products. The wool comes from Merino and Corriedale sheep, and from llama.
The knitting is done in Buenos Aires by a group of women I have worked with for years. They know the technique and its secrets better than anyone, and most of them learned it from the generation before them.
Because every piece is handled by hand from the yarn to the finished garment, no two come out identical. Small variations in colour, texture and measurements are part of the process. They are not defects.
I choose every yarn myself, and I know everyone whose hands touch a NIDO piece. No part of the process is hurried, and none of it happens where I cannot see it.
—TELAR AND KIDS
In 2014 I started Telar, a home line of blankets, rugs and cushions hand-woven on a loom. In 2016 I presented a NIDO collection for children. Both are made to order, like everything else. Write to me if you are interested in either.
In 2016 I also ran a small school of textile trades in Buenos Aires.
—STOCKISTS
NIDO is stocked by General Store in Venice, Lowell in Portland and Loop in Los Angeles; by Riviera in Basel and Kari Kari in Zurich; and is distributed in Japan by Labora.
—DEVELOPMENT FOR BRANDS
Alongside my own collections, I develop and produce knitwear for other brands — from a sketch, from a reference, or from scratch. I have done this for Our Legacy (Sweden) and SEEALL (Japan), among others. If you are looking for a knitwear partner who works by hand and in small quantities, write to me and tell me what you have in mind.
